Frequently Asked Questions about Botox

There are several factors that should always be considered when it comes to whether or not you are a suitable candidate for Botox. However, here are some examples of the frequently asked questions that we field from clients regarding Botox:

1. How does Botox work?
Botox is a neurotoxin that blocks movement in the muscles. The effects of Botox usually last three to four months. The number of units we use vary on the treatment areas and your desired results. Keep in mind that we can always help you determine if you’re a good candidate for Botox.

3. Is Botox only for women?
Not at all. We use Botox for men and women successfully. It is used to treat Crow’s feet, lines, wrinkles, frown lines, forehead lines, and much more!

4. Do I have to be a certain age to start treatment?
Oftentimes Botox is recommended as a preventative measure for younger patients. This depends on the severity of their lines. Many men and women choose to have Botox early to limit their need for treatment in the future and to help prevent deep lines or wrinkles from developing.

5. How often should I get injections?
One of the common questions about Botox we get revolves around how often a person should come in for a treatment. Botox usually metabolizes in the body after three to four months. This means you will need routine appointments to maintain your desired results. For those who are older, who are highly active, or who have a fast metabolism, you will need follow-up visits more often. The more treatments you have, the more units you’ll need as your body develops antibodies that attempt to block the efforts of Botox over time.

6. How are dermal fillers and Botox different?
Dermal fillers add volume and definition to areas of the face, while Botox paralyzes muscles and is used to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

7. Is Botox safe?
“Is Botox safe?” is another example of the questions about Botox we receive. There are several Botox myths that you may have heard. Botox is FDA cleared for cosmetic use and is approved for reversing lines and wrinkles. However, those with neurological diseases, who are pregnant, or are breastfeeding are not good candidates for Botox treatment.

8. How long will my results last?
Although Botox can last from three to four months, this timeframe can significantly be affected by the patients’ metabolism. One of the Botox mistakes that you can make is not scheduling future appointments.

9. Does Botox hurt?
Most of our patients at The Laser Cafe say they experience slight discomfort or a pinching feeling at the injection sites. Most patients report that the sensation goes away shortly after treatment is done.

10. Should I expect any side effects?
Some common side effects from Botox treatment include bruising, swelling, redness, or tenderness at injection sites. However, all of these should resolve after a short time. Keep in mind there are many things you should avoid after Botox to make the most out of your appointment.

Botox is injected strategically at different parts of your face to create a youthful and softer look. Typically, the full effect of Botox can be seen in as little as one to two weeks post-treatment. A follow-up appointment is recommended two weeks after your initial treatment to help us determine whether any changes need to be made to your custom treatment plan and your subsequent scheduled visits to our San Diego medical spa.
