Understanding Security Fence Types

The idea behind these tests came from constantly thinking about how easy it would be for an experienced burglar to climb over common fences. I decided to shed light on this issue by filming myself attempting to scale various types of fences, with the homeowners' permission, of course. Here's how it works:

1. I visit people’s houses, explain who I am and why I’m there, and ask if I can film myself climbing their fence or wall.
2. Whether I succeed or fail, I upload the video on this website and on YouTube (with their permission).
3. This allows you to gain a clearer understanding of which kinds of security fences or walls are most effective.
4. If you're considering a change to your current fence or wall, these tests can help inform your decision.

Test #1 - Steel Gate With Spikes

This test features a metal automatic gate with sharp spikes along the middle section, but none on the top. Result: Success!

Test #2 - Steel Palisade Fence With Spikes

This was a daunting climb due to the sharp spikes, but it turned out to be manageable. Despite its reputation, this type of fence was not overly challenging to overcome. Watch the video and see for yourself. Result: Success!

Test #3 - Normal Wire Fence

Many homes use this type of fence because it’s affordable. However, it poses little resistance to determined burglars. They could easily cut through or climb over it. Result: Success!

Conclusions Based on These Tests

Many supposedly “secure” fences can be easily breached with some physical effort. Here are the key takeaways from my tests:

1. Any barrier is better than nothing. As a homeowner, ensure you have a perimeter barrier.
2. Palisade fencing is intimidating and challenging, making it a strong recommendation over standard options.
3. Barbs and spikes greatly deter intruders, but their design and placement are crucial. Tighter spikes are more effective.

Sharp Spikes Closer Together

Spikes positioned closer together can prove effective as they prevent easy placement of feet and can even penetrate the soles of shoes. In one of my earlier videos, I experienced this first-hand. Barbed wire also poses a significant challenge, as does razor wire. While I haven’t filmed a climb over these, they are incredibly difficult to breach.

The Biggest Lesson

I decided against testing electric fences due to the risk of shocks. Even if the shock is weak, it wasn't worth the risk without proper protective measures. This reluctance to approach electric fences indicates their effectiveness in deterring intruders.

Top Tips for Home Security

Based on my experience, here are my top tips:

1. Ensure you have a fence or wall; any barrier is better than nothing.
2. Palisade fences are generally more secure.
3. Spikes and sharp metal features are effective deterrents.
4. Barbed wire on top of walls is very difficult to climb over without specialized tools.
5. Invest in electric fences for the highest level of security; they are effective, albeit more expensive.
