What is a root rake used for?
What to Know Before Buying a Root Rake Grapple
In various contexts, a root rake grapple proves to be an indispensable tool for clearing land, whether it involves removing roots, debris, or other obstacles. It is especially useful for tackling challenging materials like brush, logs, tree stumps, loose hay, and rocks. With its unique design, a root rake grapple excels at effortlessly extracting stubborn roots.
YuchaiHI supply professional and honest service.
When to Use a Root Rake Grapple
A root rake grapple, often referred to as a brush rake grapple, serves the purpose entailed in its name. It is an essential piece of equipment designed to simplify land clearing by efficiently managing hard-to-handle materials. Our grapples lead the way in effectively removing roots.

5 Advantages of Virnig Root Rake Grapples
Our root rake grapples stand out from the competition with five distinctive benefits.
1. Replaceable Teeth
Virnig Root Rake Grapples are constructed with cast steel teeth that penetrate deep into and beneath stubborn roots and debris. To prolong the life of your attachment and ensure peak performance, replacement teeth are available for all root rake grapples V40 and above. For the V30 model, which fits most compact tractors, we utilize AR400 steel to enhance the attachment's resilience against regular use.
2. Unparalleled Strength
In the market, many manufacturers employ A36 steel (with a minimum yield strength of 36,000 PSI), which is considered low-grade. In contrast, we utilize Grade 50 steel (50,000 PSI minimum yield strength) for all of our root rake grapples. For our most extensive grapples, which require enhanced strength, we’ll employ Grade 80 steel (80,000 PSI minimum yield strength). For some compact tractor attachments needing strength without excess weight, we apply AR400 plate steel (150,000 PSI minimum yield strength). This superior quality will be apparent over time, ensuring a longer lifespan for your attachment.
3. Cylinder Guards
While raking roots and debris, there is a risk that materials could climb against the back of your grapple, potentially disrupting your hydraulic cylinders. To counter this, most models feature standard cylinder guards for your peace of mind while you work.
4. NitroSteel® Cylinder Rods
Our grapple attachments incorporate NitroSteel® cylinder rods along with replaceable Teflon® coated bushings for enhanced functionality. These rods are designed for durability, resisting the flaking and pitting that can affect chrome-plated rods, which often compromise seals and internals. Moreover, the pins securing the grapple jaws span the entire hinge, promoting stability during use.
5. Two-Cylinder Open Jaw Design
The two-cylinder open jaw design for grapples V40 and higher allows for efficient gathering of significant brush and debris piles. The locked clamp feature ensures that materials remain securely in place during transport, while the well-designed tine spacing helps you collect only the desired debris, leaving soil and smaller materials behind.
Moreover, our V60 Root Rake Grapple has dual-position hard stops (full open and closed) to minimize stress and damage to the cylinders during back-dragging or clamping.
Choosing the Right Root Rake/Brush Rake Grapple
Here’s an overview to assist you in selecting the appropriate grapple for your task:
V30 Compact Tractor Root Rake Grapple – Suitable for compact tractors with less than 1,500 lb operating capacity.
V40 Root Rake Grapple – An excellent entry-level option for smaller skid steers.
V50 Root Rake Grapple – Equipped with aggressive teeth for penetrating dense debris.
V60 Root Rake Grapple – Features thicker tines for more robust lifting capabilities.
Utilize our comparison chart to find the root rake grapple that suits both your machine and project requirements. Keep in mind that your load capacity includes the weight of the attachment, along with the load you aim to carry.
